At the Leafy Hydroponics Event, Arnold de Kievit, International Sales Manager at Oreon, reflected on the evolution of LED lighting in leafy greens over the past 15 years, categorizing its development into four key phases. Initially met with skepticism, early adopters faced challenges as they transitioned from traditional lighting to LEDs, which were often misperceived as unconventional. The demand for consistent growth and higher yields prompted a gradual acceptance of this technology. As growers’ confidence grew, LED setups advanced significantly, improving in intensity, efficiency, and spectral flexibility. Today, full LED installations are standard, with future developments expected to focus on even higher light outputs and more sophisticated spectral controls, catering to the increasing interest in vertical propagation techniques.
