Construction has commenced on a new hockey pitch at Banyul-Warri Fields in Torquay, funded by the Victorian government’s Regional sports Infrastructure Program. The facility will feature a synthetic playing surface, LED lighting, an electronic scoreboard, and spectator seating, aiming for completion by early next year. Local hockey club vice president Andrew Crowley, who has advocated for this venue since 2012, highlighted its importance in increasing player recruitment and participation, particularly among children. The Torquay Tornadoes currently operate out of Stead Park in Corio, facing challenges due to travel commitments. With the new pitch, the club hopes to boost participation by 20% in its inaugural year, attracting players from across the Surf Coast. Local officials, including Cr Liz Pattison, expressed enthusiasm for the project, recognizing its potential to enhance community sports activities.
