A severe solar storm, triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, is set to make the northern lights visible farther south in the U.S., potentially reaching locations as far as Alabama and Northern California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a G4 geomagnetic storm watch, warning of possible disruptions to technology, including issues with voltage control and GPS systems. The storm will occur on Thursday and Friday, and while everyday life is typically not greatly affected, there is a heightened risk for navigation and power grid disturbances. This event comes as Earth heads towards the peak of Solar Cycle 25, which is expected to bring increased solar activity throughout 2024.
