The southern Pinal County area, recognized for its relatively dark skies, is gearing up to celebrate International Dark Sky Week from April 21 to April 28. This initiative aims to highlight the issues of light pollution and its detrimental effects on wildlife, human health, and the environment. The Pinal County Board of Supervisors, alongside local communities, emphasizes the importance of effective outdoor lighting that meets county guidelines while minimizing light pollution. Although the region has largely retained its dark skies, concerns are raised as some residents have replaced low-light fixtures with brighter options that contribute to light pollution. To kick off Dark Sky Week, all unnecessary lights will be turned off from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 21, allowing residents to experience the wonders of the night sky. A video illustrating the effects of light pollution and potential solutions will also be available for viewing.
