In Newport, Mayo County is tackling light pollution by reducing public lighting to 75% brightness from midnight to 6 a.m., a move that aligns with the county’s efforts to enhance environmental sustainability. With 73% of its public lighting retrofitted to LED, Mayo County Council has achieved a remarkable 50% reduction in light pollution, resulting in over €34,000 in savings this year alone. Despite the absence of legislation addressing light pollution in Ireland, the council is pushing for an expansion of dimming initiatives, pending approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland. The upcoming International Artificial Light at Night Conference in Westport highlights Mayo’s commitment to tackling light pollution, as the county was recognized as the ‘Dark Sky Place of the Year 2024’. Councillor Peter Flynn emphasized the initiative’s broader potential impact if successful across the county.
