Jackson Hole Named as the First Airport in the World to Achieve ‘Dark Sky’ Status

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) has made history by becoming the first airport globally to receive certification as an “Urban Night Sky Place” from DarkSky International, recognizing its significant efforts to reduce light pollution in the unique environment of Grand Teton National Park. Over the past year, airport staff dedicated substantial time to retrofit nearly 200 light fixtures and implement a new Lighting Management Plan focused on minimizing light spill while ensuring safety and compliance with FAA regulations. These initiatives not only enhance energy efficiency and wildlife conditions but also reflect the airport’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship. The certification aligns with community efforts to protect the region’s night skies, underscoring the importance of preserving natural darkness for future generations.
