King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has successfully localized blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology, enhancing energy-efficient lighting solutions and supporting the Kingdom’s commitment to innovation and research development. This achievement, facilitated by KACST’s Saudi Semiconductor Program, not only trains national talents in electronic chip design and manufacturing but also strengthens the Kingdom’s global competitiveness in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives. The new blue LED technology significantly reduces energy consumption by up to 80% and boasts an efficiency of 200 lumens per watt, while also extending the lifespan of lighting solutions by 20 times. Furthermore, it contributes to reduced electronic waste and lower greenhouse gas emissions, making it a vital component of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to advance sustainable development and combat climate change.
