Kaikōura has officially become the twenty-second International Dark Sky Sanctuary globally, following a dedicated four-year campaign by local volunteers and astronomers. This recognition highlights Kaikōura as New Zealand’s third dark sky sanctuary, alongside Great Barrier Island and Stewart Island, furthering the country’s goal of becoming a dark sky nation. In celebration of its new status, travel experts at New Zealand In Depth have curated experiences that showcase the region’s natural beauty, from star-gazing opportunities and gourmet foraging to adventure activities like zip-lining. Visitors can stay at unique accommodations, such as the new Cliff Top Cabins and the Manakau PurePod eco cabins, both offering stunning views and immersive experiences in the pristine natural environment.
