Kaikōura is enhancing its appeal as a year-round destination following its designation as a dark sky sanctuary nearly a year ago. Colette Doughty, co-ordinator of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust, announced the launch of new web resources designed for self-guided stargazing experiences, which cater to both locals and visitors. While the area sees a significant drop in cruise ship arrivals—expected to halved this summer—new astrotourism initiatives, such as Moana Skies, are emerging to fill the gap. Efforts to maintain low light pollution continue, aimed at protecting local wildlife and promoting energy-efficient lighting. The trust is also pursuing international dark community status to further bolster its commitment to dark sky protection. For more details, visit kaikouradarksky.nz.
