Heritage street lighting that is “dark sky friendly” has been installed on a historic 200-year-old street in Thorny Hills, Kendal, Cumbria, responding to local residents’ requests for a design reminiscent of the 19th century. The modern lights had previously disrupted nearby homes and were replaced with refurbished cast iron lamp-posts from the Whitehaven Foundry that enhance energy efficiency while appropriately illuminating the street. As part of the Dark Skies Cumbria initiative, the new lights dim by 50% overnight to reduce electricity usage and minimize impact on nocturnal wildlife. The project, led by Westmorland and Furness Council in collaboration with Friends of the Lake District, reflects a commitment to lowering carbon emissions and light pollution.
