Kerala is set to illuminate its longest highway, National Highway-66, with a staggering 64,500 LED streetlights, enhancing safety and visibility along the 645-kilometre stretch. Each light pole, placed 38 to 42 metres apart, will feature two bulbs—one for the highway and another for service roads—consuming between 180 to 250 watts. The trial lighting has commenced on the 39 km Thalappady–Chengala section, with 3,200 bulbs already activated. This project, requiring an estimated power consumption of 16,700 kilowatts, will see the Kerala State Electricity Board managing the energy supply and billing arrangement for the next 15 years. Additionally, an automated lighting control system will manage operations, ensuring lights are on from 6 PM to 6 AM.
