A venue in southern New South Wales, the Kestrel Nest EcoHut, has achieved the distinction of being the first “dark-sky” accommodation in Australia, recognized by DarkSky International for its minimal light pollution and excellent stargazing conditions. Owner Louise Freckelton has reported a significant increase in bookings since the certification, attracting a diverse range of visitors, from casual travelers to astronomy enthusiasts. The eco-hut’s location in the Snowy Mountains presents an opportunity to boost local tourism, with Freckelton encouraging guests to explore surrounding communities. DarkSky International aims to conserve dark skies not only for stargazing but also to protect nocturnal wildlife and ecosystems.
