Ruthin’s sports venues are pioneering efforts to combat nighttime light pollution through innovative sustainable lighting solutions. Collaborating with the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape team, local facilities including Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun and Llanfwrog Community Centre have implemented eco-friendly lighting systems that minimize light spillage and enhance energy efficiency. These new lights, which produce a warmer color temperature less harmful to wildlife, have achieved significant reductions in energy consumption—45% at the Rugby Club and 61% at the tennis Club—while ensuring optimal visibility for users. The initiative, part of a broader Welsh Government-supported program, highlights the importance of dark skies for both wildlife and human well-being. Local officials praise the project for its potential to serve as a model for similar efforts across Wales, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents and protecting biodiversity.
