A research scientist at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has received a $540,000 grant to investigate the potential of LED lighting to enhance strawberry production in greenhouses. Dr. Li Ma, from KPU’s Institute for Sustainable Horticulture, highlights the project’s focus on adapting lighting to suit the specific growth needs of various strawberry varieties, which can improve plant health while reducing energy and maintenance costs. The initiative, supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Mitacs, involves industry partnerships with companies like Sollum Technologies and Star Produce, facilitating knowledge transfer between academia and practical applications. The project also emphasizes training for students involved, preparing them for future careers in sustainable agriculture. Ultimately, the research aims to bolster local food security and promote environmentally friendly practices in strawberry farming.
