Friends of the Lake District’s Dark Skies Cumbria project will host the annual Big Lighting Switch Off on Friday, March 28, starting at 7pm, marking its fifth year aimed at reducing light pollution and conserving energy. Street lights in Ambleside and Grasmere will be switched off for the evening to promote awareness about energy consumption and its effects on wildlife and human health. The event will include a drop-in session at Ambleside Parish Centre to showcase dark sky-friendly lighting options, followed by a talk about the Dark Skies Cumbria Project. Additionally, the National Trust encourages attendees to bring binoculars to Allen Bank in Grasmere for stargazing. Local officials emphasize the importance of this initiative in achieving Cumbria’s net-zero targets by 2037 and enhancing community well-being. Following the Ambleside and Grasmere event, a similar Big Switch Off will take place in Keswick on April 28.
