On September 12, over 25 attendees gathered at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge headquarters in Newburyport for the unveiling of a glow-in-the-dark mural created by local artist Jenn Houle, in partnership with the refuge and the Artists for the Great Marsh. The mural features various migratory species against an infinity symbol, highlighting the cyclical nature of animal migrations and the importance of preserving dark skies. It is bordered by four constellations that remind viewers of the significance of the night sky in navigation and cultural heritage. The event included an art workshop where participants crafted their own glow-in-the-dark stepping stones, while refuge staff emphasized the detrimental effects of light pollution on both human health and wildlife. Suggestions were provided for reducing outdoor lighting to help restore natural darkness, crucial for the survival of many species.
