Las Vegas Temple to Restrict Lighting Features

The Las Vegas City Council recently approved a “dark sky” ordinance aimed at regulating light emissions from new constructions, including a forthcoming Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple near Lone Mountain. While the ordinance does not directly mention the temple project, it specifically targets the rural Lone Mountain neighborhood and the La Madre Foothills, where residents prioritize darker skies and lower light pollution. The new law mandates that lights on structures taller than 35 feet must be turned off between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and restricts lighting temperatures to not exceed 4,000 Kelvin, prohibiting overly bright white and blue lights. Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the temple’s impact on the rural character of the area, but the church has stated it will adhere to the new regulations. A recent District Court ruling dismissed a legal challenge against the project, which will feature a nearly 200-foot steeple, ample parking, and landscaped grounds.
