Liberty Hill has formally submitted its application to become an International Dark Sky Community as of November 20, marking a significant step in its efforts to combat light pollution and preserve the night sky. This designation acknowledges communities that actively work to diminish light pollution through measures such as enforcing outdoor lighting ordinances and promoting dark sky education. The process, which could take one to three years, involves a review by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) and feedback from the Dark Sky Places Committee. The initiative began in 2020 when residents raised concerns about light pollution, leading to a resolution signed by former Mayor Liz Branigan in 2022. Local officials and volunteers have since engaged in community outreach, conducted surveys, and retrofitted city lighting to support this goal. Council Member Diane Williams expressed pride in reaching this milestone, highlighting the city’s commitment to safeguarding its night skies for future generations.
