Link Found Between Diesel Generators and LED Fishing Practices

In a significant ruling, the High Court of Panaji has established a direct link between diesel generator (DG) sets and illegal LED fishing practices, noting that most inspected fishing vessels lacked appliances other than those necessary for LED lighting. These lights, both submerged and surface-level, are used to attract fish and are banned under regulations from 2016 and 2017. In rejecting claims by the Directorate of Fisheries that DG sets were vital for communication equipment and backup power, the court referenced a report from Goa Shipyard Limited, which indicated that conventional fishing boats could operate without DG sets and revealed inadequate onboard facilities for crew and fish storage. This ruling highlights ongoing concerns about compliance with fishing regulations and the integrity of the fishing industry in the region.
