In Sacramento, businesses along the K Street corridor continue to grapple with the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shifted weekday foot traffic and led to noticeable vacancies in the area. After the public health emergency ended, the once-bustling lunch spots have seen a decline in daytime customers, primarily due to fewer state workers in the vicinity. While pedestrian traffic has rebounded to about 80% of pre-pandemic levels, many business owners, like Roberto Castro of Philly Cheesesteaks, express frustration over the lack of consistent crowds. In contrast, evening and weekend visitation has exceeded 2019 figures, prompting optimism among some local entrepreneurs. More than 20 new businesses have opened in the past two years, although six have closed. Plans for an LED lighting project aim to enhance safety and comfort for pedestrians by early 2025, and the Downtown Commons area has reported a return to 105% of its pre-pandemic activity level. As the Sacramento Kings’ season opener approaches, businesses are hopeful for an uptick in patronage.
