Local News: Providing Steady Hockey Coverage for the Bay Area

In a significant development for hockey in the Bay of Plenty, the Tauranga Hockey Association (THA) has successfully completed a major turf upgrade at the Whanga Turf, enhancing both performance and safety for players. Led by an expert installer from the 2024 Paris Olympics, the project included new inline channels to improve drainage, a thicker shock pad for added comfort, and a high-performance wet-dry surface that requires less watering. Complementing the turf improvements, energy-efficient LED lighting has been installed to enhance visibility and safety. Financed by a grant of $370,453 from TECT and in collaboration with Tauranga City Council, the upgrade addresses long-standing drainage issues and will support the growing demand for hockey in the region, where THA serves over 3,000 members. General Manager Megan Cleverley emphasized the importance of quality facilities in fostering community engagement through sport.
