Deschutes County is moving toward enhancing its lighting regulations to achieve Dark Sky certification, aimed at reducing light pollution and preserving the night sky. During the Board of Commissioners meeting on August 27, 2025, officials outlined proposed improvements to the county’s lighting ordinance, including stricter limitations on light color temperature, a mandate to switch off lights by 11 PM, and mandatory inspections of new installations. These changes seek to minimize blue light emissions that disrupt ecosystems and human sleep. Community involvement has been highlighted, particularly through student-led lighting inventories, and the county is part of the Oregon Sky Glow measurement network. Officials emphasized that incorporated cities wishing to join the Dark Sky certification must independently meet these requirements. The meeting also addressed residents’ concerns about excessive lighting in certain areas, reflecting the county’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community quality of life.
