Rushil Kukreja, a dedicated student from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, has taken significant steps to combat light pollution by founding the nonprofit organization Princia and drafting related legislation. His commitment stems from recognizing the environmental and health impacts of artificial light, notably influenced by a personal family health crisis. With 250 advocates worldwide, Princia focuses on education, research, and community engagement to raise awareness and promote solutions like warmer streetlight colors and improved lighting designs. Rushil has gained the support of state officials and is collaborating with Delegate Rip Sullivan to propose a legislative package aimed at informing the public, promoting best practices, and establishing “dark sky preserves” in Virginia. Local initiatives, such as Fairfax County’s ordinance to limit light pollution around an astronomical observatory, reflect growing support for reducing light pollution, although challenges remain regarding cost and county-level advocacy.
