Maharashtra is advancing its transformation into a smart urban area through energy-efficient initiatives, prominently the distribution of over 10 million LED bulbs under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP). This initiative, managed by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), has saved residents approximately INR 14 million (US $208,096) in the past seven months, reduced energy consumption by 3.5 million KWh, and diminished greenhouse gas emissions by about 2,900 metric tons of CO2. The LED bulbs, sold at discounts of up to 75% lower than market prices, promise significant savings on electricity bills. Additionally, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) is investing INR 70 million to upgrade street lighting systems to LED and explore renewable energy sources for these installations. EESL aims to replace 77 million incandescent bulbs nationwide by 2019, contributing to an overarching strategy for sustainable urban development.
