Major Manufacturers Set to Gain Significantly from China’s LED Lighting Subsidy Initiative

The Chinese central government is set to launch a subsidy program worth 2.2 billion yuan ($346 million) in early July, aimed at promoting the use of energy-saving lamps and LED lighting as part of a broader initiative to bolster domestic demand and enhance energy conservation. This initiative falls under a national subsidy plan totaling 26.5 billion yuan for household appliances, as revealed by the State Council on May 16. Experts suggest that while large lighting manufacturers with advanced technologies will gain significantly from the subsidies, smaller companies may face closure due to intensified competition and overcapacity in the sector. Notably, the LED lighting industry is expected to reach a valuation of 500 billion yuan by 2015, under the government’s strategic plan to foster fewer but larger, technologically advanced firms.
