The City of Medicine Hat has completed significant energy efficiency upgrades at 12 facilities, including the Medicine Hat Regional Airport and City Hall, replacing a total of 2,357 lights and 883 fluorescent tubes with LED retrofit bulbs. This initiative is projected to reduce electrical consumption by 30 to 50 percent, significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 3,662 tonnes over the project’s lifetime while saving nearly $98,000 annually in utility costs. Project manager Kevin Schaaf expressed gratitude for the support from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), emphasizing the dual benefits of environmental sustainability and cost savings. The MCCAC applauded Medicine Hat’s proactive approach, highlighting the effectiveness of bundling energy efficiency upgrades through the Community Energy Conservation program, funded by the Alberta Government.
