Diane Turnshek is a passionate advocate for dark skies in Pittsburgh, where she blends her background in astronomy with public activism. After earning a master’s degree in astronomy, Turnshek raised her four sons while writing science fiction, and later embarked on a mission to combat light pollution. She founded the local chapter of the International DarkSky Association and played a key role in drafting Pittsburgh’s Dark Sky Ordinance, making it the first city in Pennsylvania to adopt such legislation. This initiative aims to replace over 35,000 streetlights with dark-sky-compliant LEDs, addressing light pollution’s negative impact on human health, wildlife, and our ability to enjoy the night sky. Turnshek’s fervor for this cause stems from her experiences growing up, where visibility of the Milky Way was common, a stark contrast to today’s light-polluted skies.
