Labour MP Graeme Downie’s inquiry into the safety of LED headlights has sparked a wave of concern from drivers, who report being “blinded” by the brightness of oncoming vehicles. While the Department for Transport asserts that current collision statistics do not indicate that advances in lighting technology are adversely affecting road safety, the AA and various MPs express worries about glare from modern headlights, particularly on higher vehicles like SUVs. National collision data revealed that dazzling headlights contributed to 216 incidents in 2023, suggesting a need for further examination. The government has initiated independent research to investigate the causes of headlamp glare, with results expected by summer 2025, amid growing public concern over road safety.
