Minister Aims to Address Road Safety Issues Linked to Bright LED Headlights

Motorists across the UK are expressing increasing concern over the impact of brighter headlights, particularly those from LED-equipped vehicles, with many reporting feelings of being “blinded” while driving. The AA’s president, Edmund King, noted that three-quarters of drivers have experienced glare from oncoming headlights, particularly from higher vehicles like SUVs. This issue has garnered attention from MPs, including Graeme Downie, who highlighted the dangers posed by dazzling lights and the potential lack of awareness among some drivers about their lighting’s effects on others. While government statistics have not shown a definitive link between improved lighting technology and increased road collisions, officials have initiated independent research to explore headlamp glare’s root causes and develop appropriate measures. This research is expected to provide insights by the summer of 2025.
