Labour MP Lilian Greenwood addressed concerns regarding the safety of LED headlights, stating that current statistics do not indicate that new lighting technologies are leading to an increase in road vehicle collisions. However, AA President Edmund King highlighted feedback from members who report feeling “blinded” by the brightness of LED lights, particularly on higher vehicles like SUVs. Official data reveals that dazzling headlights were a factor in 216 road incidents in 2023, with a notable rise in complaints compared to previous years. MP Graeme Downie urged greater awareness among drivers about the impact of their own headlights on others, emphasizing the importance of balancing individual driver safety with the welfare of all road users. The government has initiated independent research to investigate headlamp glare, expected to publish findings in the summer of 2025. Meanwhile, both the RAC and constituency residents have echoed concerns over the increasing brightness and potential dangers posed by modern lighting technologies on the road.
