Modifications to LDRs Aimed at Decreasing Light Pollution

At a recent board meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners discussed potential updates to the county’s land development regulations aimed at mitigating light pollution. Mayor Dowling Watford expressed concerns about the emotional impact of losing the ability to enjoy the night sky, particularly given the area’s designation as a Dark Sky Park. The proposals, driven by input from County Attorney Wade Vose, focus on implementing new lighting standards that promote downward-facing lights, which would reduce light spillage and enhance visibility of stars. The proposed regulations will apply only to new lighting installations and aim to protect both the environment and energy resources. While existing lighting fixtures will not need replacing unless entirely removed, there is a push for wider adoption of dark sky standards across the county, as officials seek to preserve the natural nighttime landscape.
