A 250-year-old mechanical artwork of Italy’s Mount Vesuvius, originally designed by Sir William Hamilton in 1775, has finally come to life thanks to modern technology and the efforts of two University of Melbourne engineering students. Utilizing a detailed sketch preserved in the Bordeaux Municipal Library, students Xinyu Xu and Yuji Zeng spent three months reconstructing the device in The Creator Space workshop. Their work includes advanced materials and technologies, such as programmable LED lighting, to animate the volcanic activity depicted in Hamilton’s original design. This innovative project is now featured at “The Grand Tour” exhibition at the university’s Baillieu Library, running until June 28, 2026.
