Nevada City, a historic gold rush town in California, is working to preserve its dark skies and starry nights by applying for certification as a dark sky community. Utilizing low-light gas lamps, the city aims to combat light pollution—which increases by approximately 10 percent annually—as it also prepares for mandatory electricity shut-offs during fire season. City Planner Lisa McCandless and Mayor Gary Petersen emphasize the importance of reducing light pollution for both aesthetic and ecological reasons, noting that brighter lights do not equate to safety. The city plans to implement regulations on future lighting installations and replace existing city lights with warmer, downward-facing options. With support from the South Yuba River Citizens League, Nevada City’s goal is to achieve certification by March 2026, enhancing both human health and local wildlife habitats.
