The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, in collaboration with Travel Nevada, has introduced the Nevada Dark Skies Toolkit, a resource designed to combat light pollution and promote astro-tourism across the state. The toolkit serves diverse groups, including schools, municipalities, and tribal governments, providing step-by-step guidance on obtaining the Nevada Starry Skies Certification and best practices for responsible outdoor lighting. It also includes educational materials on the benefits of dark skies and strategies for engaging communities in light pollution reduction. With 80% of Nevada’s landscape consisting of public land, the state is poised to lead in night sky conservation, as evidenced by existing DarkSky sites like Massacre Rim and Great Basin National Park. The toolkit is available for free download on the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation’s website, and the organization is inviting partnerships to launch the Nevada Starry Skies program.
