The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation has launched the Nevada Starry Skies Certification Program to promote and preserve the state’s remarkable dark skies, which showcase some of the brightest stars in the world. This initiative aims to combat light pollution, benefiting local wildlife and ecosystems, while enhancing stargazing experiences for residents and visitors alike. By encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient, fully shielded outdoor lighting, the program seeks to maintain Nevada’s natural beauty and bolster outdoor recreation. Initiated by Senate Bill 52 in 2021, the certification program will work collaboratively with various community stakeholders and aims to attract tourists to rural areas near dark sky locations, thereby supporting local economies. Education about the importance of preserving dark skies will also play a significant role in the program’s efforts.
