An Imperial College London-led consortium has launched a new £3.6 million project, titled ‘Moving IMPACT: Integrated Means to Power Agriculture, Clean Cooking and Transportation,’ aimed at enhancing solar energy accessibility in Sub-Saharan Africa. Collaborating with over 13 partners, including universities in Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda, the initiative seeks to integrate solar mini-grids with electric vehicle charging infrastructure to meet local agricultural and energy needs while supporting sustainable development. Funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge Programme, the three-year project is set to begin in January 2025, with the goal of providing efficient and clean energy solutions that can also facilitate community services. Dr. Adrià Junyent-Ferré, the project lead, emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in resolving energy challenges in the region, which remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels despite its abundant solar resources.
