GT Advanced Technologies has released a case study analyzing the influence of sapphire color on the LED manufacturing process, using blind samples of its GT ASF sapphire alongside LED-grade sapphire from various sources. The research included independent Glow Discharge Mass Spectroscopy analysis and a High Brightness (HB) LED device fabrication study via Photo-thermal Common-path Interferometry. The findings confirmed that all sapphire exhibits inherent color characteristics, with the pink hue of GT’s ASF material not indicating impurities and not negatively impacting the manufacturing process. Furthermore, pink ASF sapphire produced the lowest absorption and highest transmission epi-wafers in comparison to other samples. These results are part of a broader initiative by GT to characterize material properties affecting the HB LED value chain, with findings to be presented at the GG LED Conference on December 9-10 in Shenzhen, China.
