Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado has officially been designated as an International Dark Sky Park by DarkSky International, recognizing its exceptional night sky viewing opportunities. Spanning nearly 22,000 acres in Chaffee County, this popular outdoor destination for whitewater rafting and camping becomes the 12th Dark Sky Park in Colorado, joining other notable locations like Great Sand Dunes National Park. The designation is largely attributed to the efforts of the nonprofit Friends of Browns Canyon, who organized stargazing events and conducted necessary light measurements. This new status reflects ongoing conservation efforts in the region, as highlighted by state legislation aimed at combating light pollution and promoting dark skies for health, tourism, and environmental benefits. DarkSky International emphasized the park’s importance as a model for nearby communities in enhancing their nighttime environment.
