Bradford Council’s Smart Street Lighting Project, initiated in 2018, aims to replace approximately 56,500 streetlights with energy-efficient LED versions, funded by a £45 million investment through borrowing and loans. The initiative is yielding significant energy savings, reportedly reducing the council’s street lighting bill by £8 million over the past seven years. Features of the new lights include centralized control for dimming and fault notifications, enhancing operational efficiency. Despite mixed public reactions to the brightness of the new lights, particularly in the Keighley West ward where annual costs have dramatically decreased from £272,251 to £60,091, the project is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 6,000 tonnes annually once fully implemented, as well as replace 15,600 outdated lighting columns.
