The Arctic region is undergoing significant change, warming nearly four times faster than the global average, which has led to increased industrial activity and development. A recent study utilizing satellite data from the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program reveals that between 1992 and 2013, artificial lighting in the Arctic grew by 5 percent annually, with 234,000 square miles transitioning from dark to lit. Notably, only 15 percent of the illuminated areas host human settlements, indicating that most artificial light comes from industrial activities, particularly oil and gas extraction and mining. The Russian Arctic saw the most notable increase, expanding by nearly 170,000 square miles, largely due to oil field developments. The research underscores the need for monitoring industrial progress and resource management to protect the Arctic’s fragile ecosystems.
