October 2025 offers an exciting opportunity for skywatchers with two meteor showers and two visiting comets. The Draconid meteor shower peaks on the evening of October 8, though its visibility may be hampered by the bright “Harvest” supermoon occurring just two days prior. Typically a minor shower producing only a handful of meteors per hour, it may not deliver its usual spectacle this year. In contrast, the Orionid meteor shower peaks from October 21-22, coinciding perfectly with a new moon and potentially allowing for 10-20 fast, bright meteors to be viewed. Observers are encouraged to find dark areas for optimal viewing and will also have the chance to see Comets Lemmon and SWAN, both approaching Earth this month. With cosmic events unfolding in the fall sky, October promises to be a memorable time for astronomy enthusiasts.
