Antelope, a small town in north-central Oregon with historical ties to the Rajneesh Movement, has been recognized as the first International Dark Sky Community in the state by DarkSky International. Announced on December 4, this certification highlights Antelope’s commitment to preserving its starry skies through initiatives such as a new outdoor lighting ordinance and the removal of light-polluting streetlights. DarkSky commended local advocates for blending the town’s rich history with its dark sky initiative, promoting astro-tourism while maintaining cultural heritage. Antelope joins Oregon’s growing list of International Dark Sky Places, aimed at reducing light pollution and enhancing the well-being of both wildlife and residents.
