Antelope, a small town in Oregon with a population of 37, has been designated as the state’s first “Dark Sky Community” by DarkSky International, highlighting its commitment to preserving nighttime skies by limiting light pollution. To achieve this certification, Antelope adopted new outdoor lighting regulations, collaborated with Wasco Rural Electric to reduce and replace streetlights, and engaged the community in initiatives promoting dark sky awareness, including providing outdoor light bulbs and hosting “star parties” with donated telescopes. This initiative aims to redefine Antelope’s image, especially after its controversial history involving the Rajneesh Movement in the 1980s. DarkSky Oregon co-founder Michael McKeag emphasized the long-term commitment required for this certification, as the community seeks to attract astro-tourism and enhance residents’ connection to the night sky. The success of Antelope could pave the way for other Oregon cities, such as Sisters, to pursue similar designations.
