The Turn on the Lights! event in Oskaloosa brought festive cheer to the community as families gathered at City Square Park on Saturday night to witness the illumination of Christmas lights and enjoy a variety of seasonal activities. Rob and Kim Bandstra delighted attendees with their roasted nuts stand, entertaining children with a “smoke show” demonstration that involved sizzling almonds, pecans, and cashews. The evening featured music from the Oskaloosa City Band, visits with Santa, and free horse-drawn wagon rides, creating a merry atmosphere. Oskaloosa Main Street Director Angie Foster highlighted the charm of the beautifully lit square, which has been adorned with over 300,000 LED lights since 2016, as the lights were officially turned on by Citizen of the Year Russ Van Renterghem. The preparations for the display began in October and were made possible through local business support and community events. Families, like that of Jennifer Ver Meer, embraced the tradition of celebrating the beginning of the holiday season together, making lasting memories in the glow of the lights.
