Oxford’s Shining Talents Attract Visitors

Oxford’s night sky has attracted increasing interest since the region was granted international dark sky status, highlighting its potential for stargazing. Raul Elias-Drago, president of Oxford Dark Sky, noted a surge in visitors querying about observatory activities, particularly during summer. The Oxford Forest Conservation Area, spanning 11,350 hectares, became a dark sky park a year ago and has since inspired community engagement, including volunteer-run open nights at the observatory from April to October. Efforts are underway to apply for international dark sky reserve status, alongside working with local authorities on lighting regulations to enhance stargazing opportunities. With events planned for International Women’s Day and educational programs on stargazing, the observatory aims to accommodate enthusiasts despite weather challenges, emphasizing the use of binoculars for star viewing.
