The Painesville City School District is implementing an energy efficiency project that is set to significantly reduce its electricity costs, thanks in part to a state grant. This spring, the district is converting light fixtures at Harvey High School and Heritage Middle School from fluorescent to LED lighting, with Harvey being 99% converted and Heritage approximately 35-40% converted upon completion. District Operations Director Ivan Salgado estimates annual savings of around $45,000 to $46,000 in electricity expenses, equating to the energy consumption of 30 average homes. The project includes lighting upgrades in both schools’ auditoriums and gyms and is expected to be finalized by early April. Costing $237,000—$200,000 of which is covered by the grant—the initiative was supported by Massachusetts-based company Ameresco, which also facilitated the grant process. With a 10-year warranty on the new fixtures, Salgado emphasized that the project enhances energy efficiency while saving internal labor hours and allowing funding to be allocated toward other essential projects.
