Palm Beach, known for its iconic role in the soap opera “Home and Away,” is now gaining recognition for its efforts to enhance stargazing opportunities by becoming Australia’s first “urban dark sky place” at the Palm Beach headland. This initiative aims to reduce light pollution and create a clearer night sky experience for visitors while also promoting natural circadian rhythms and conserving energy. Collaborating with the Northern Beaches Council, University of Sydney Associate Professor Emrah Baki Ulas developed a lighting management plan that utilizes shielded street lighting and warmer, low-intensity lights to minimize glare and disruption. Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins praised the stunning views of the night sky now visible across the 62-hectare designated area, which includes Governor Phillip Park and Barrenjoey Headland. The project reflects a growing awareness of the importance of preserving the night sky in urban environments.
