French biotech company Orius has reported promising early results from its gravity simulator, Gravilab, which evaluates plant responses under altered gravity conditions. The initial study focuses on mizuna, a fast-growing leafy green, revealing robust aerial growth, though root systems exhibit a tendency to spread horizontally rather than grow deep. The research team plans to further analyze root architecture and plant balance before advancing to more complex crops like the Micro-Tom tomato. Gravilab integrates advanced technology to monitor various growth parameters, addressing challenges related to irrigation and air circulation in low-gravity environments. These developments aim to create efficient crop production systems that could benefit both space agriculture and Earth-based controlled environment agriculture (CEA).
