Plessey, a UK-based optoelectronic technology solutions provider, has announced a groundbreaking manufacturing method for green LEDs that eliminates the need for color conversion. This innovation is centered on developing Micro LED technology for augmented reality and display applications. Traditionally, green LEDs rely on phosphors or quantum dot materials that convert blue light, often resulting in efficiency loss. However, Plessey’s new approach uses a proprietary GaN-on-Si epitaxial growth process to create native green LEDs more efficiently, incorporating varying levels of indium in the quantum well structures. According to Chief Operating Officer Mike Snaith, this advancement positions Plessey to deliver high-performance native green micro LEDs for next-generation display and illumination devices.
