Deschutes County, part of the largest dark sky sanctuary in the world, is taking measures to reduce light pollution and protect its night skies. A public hearing is scheduled for July 10, where the Planning Commission will discuss significant changes to rural outdoor lighting regulations. The proposed updates aim to simplify existing rules, replacing complex requirements with three straightforward guidelines: lights must point downward, be fully shielded, and not spill onto neighboring properties. Although not mandatory, these best practices are intended to encourage responsible lighting and enhance community understanding of dark sky principles. The Planning Commission is gathering public input to refine its recommendations before presenting them to the Board of County Commissioners. Community members are invited to participate in the hearing either in person or virtually.
